THE MAGICAL WORLD OF FRED GOWLAND
One of my best friends in Santa Barbara is the artist Fred Gowland. I have known Fred since I was a very young girl and it’s been a treat to see his growth as an artist. Fred lives in a wonderful house in the town of Summerland which is a mere two minutes from Montecito. It used to be this honky tonk little place yet like everything around there people have moved in and it’s become beyond chic. But Fred was one of the first people I knew who moved there. He has that artist’s way of taking objects and just scattering them about and some how making every corner of his house a treat. I don’t know how he does it. If I tried it it would look like I hadn’t put anything away, when Fred does it the result is pure magic. Fred is currently selling his work like crazy in Asia. He just came back from Singapore where he had a sold out show and is soon headed for Hong Kong. No matter where he goes he is always happy to come back to Summerland and oasis he has created. I know when I’m in town I love to head up there just before sunset, Fred always has a chilled glass of white wine waiting and we sit and talk and watch the sunset. A pretty fabulous way to end the day.
Fred’s work can be seen and purchased through the Charles Karen Gallery.
