EDIE VONNEGUT’S ENCHANTED BARN
Edie Vonnegut grew up with her parents the writer Kurt Vonnegut and her mother Jane in a traditional Cape Cod clapboard house that is perfectly perched over a lake in Barnstable, Massachusetts. After going away to school and then doing a stint in New York, twenty years ago she and her husband John Squibb decided they would turn the “barn” on the property into a livable space where Edie could paint and they could raise their two sons. John is a “Zen master carpenter of the highest order” says his artist wife. And she is not kidding. When they took over the space it truly was a barn. Today it is a wonderland. John carved out bedrooms for the whole family. He made a wonderful kitchen and bathroom and big living dining room. John’s understanding of space combined with Edie’s eye for quirky detail and inspiring use of color have transformed what was once an old barn into an enchanting home.
