SNIPPETS OF SUMMER
I have been writing this blog for so long now I feel like I must end up repeating myself. And I am a creature of a certain kind of habit. I consistently respond to the same things, or perhaps I respond the same things with consistency.
Like the things that make up my summer. This is my twentieth summer coming out to Eastern Long Island and the I continue to get pleasure from the exact same things year and after year, decade after decade. I don’t do the beach thing, too much sand. I don’t ride bikes that are not nailed to the floor. I tend to do the same things I do in the city, go to my same gym and work much of the day, only difference is I’m relaxed and in prettier surroundings.
But there are those additional perks that only summer brings.
My garden. Maybe it’s living in the cement jungle of NY. Maybe it’s growing up in California or maybe it’s just that nature has a way of calming you down.
There has been hydrangea gate this summer. They all died due to an late frost. Apparently all the blooming plants in the country were bought up at great cost by a select few who could afford to spend whatever they wanted on some purple and white blossoms. My gardener sweetly snuck me a few plants the other day. Small, but they make me happy.
I love passing the Wolffer Vineyard every day on my way back from the gym. It just gets prettier.
I LOVE farm stands. This is the one I go to every summer.
I love the foods of summer. Why does everything just look and taste better?
The weird thing is I also love the big supermarket King Kullen that reminds of the ones I grew up with in Southern California. And then I have trunk to get it all home!
I love the variety of shows my husband has going on in his Glenn Horowitz Space this summer in conjunction with Grey Area. These are by Dustin Yellin.
This is by Holton Rower
I’m kind around the bend for these rings from artist Cecile Zu Hohenlohe. Currently at Glenn Horowitz Bookseller/GreyArea.
Here is a close up of one. They fit over three fingers.
I love this dip. It is the food of summer. I write about it every year. We had our first one last night. Round Swamp’s Mexican Layered Dip. Give me a bowl of chips and this and I’m good.
And while we are packing on the summer pounds how about them pies??? Round Swamp cherry-rasberry.
This chair. An ice coffee and a book.
I love walking into the kitchen and seeing these first thing in the morning.
These are my favorite flowers of summer. I know it’s summer when they appear and I know it’s over when they disappear.
I love walking into town and going to Sylvester for their Dreamy Ice Coffee.
As much as I love summer I think he likes it more. His spot, staring at the pool on the cold stone. Nothing makes him happier. Well, maybe dinner.
