SHE CALLS HER STORE KATE

For many years there was a shop in Montecito called Kate’s. It was a must stop location for jeans, great sweaters, boots and anything you’d want for that  effortless chic California look. It was owned by Kate McMahon who curated it perfectly. She also had a kick ass website where I could be found late at night throwing T-shirts and chunky sweaters into my virtual shopping cart.

One day it was gone, the store and the site. I missed it.  But I figured Kate went on to other things.

Then two week ago I was roaming around Montecito with my friend Adrienne Carrere when suddenly she took a sharp left and said “follow me” as she scampered up some whitewashed stairs.  Adrienne is the kind of girl, who when she says “follow”  – you follow.  So I did and I found myself behind Coast Village road surrounded by white-washed walls brightened by splashes of blue doors.  All of a sudden it looked like Mykonos.  Well, to be honest, I have never been to Mykonos.  But this summer it seems like everyone I follow on Instagram has, so I now have an idea of what it looks like.  Even if it was not Mykonos it was very charming. At the top of the stairs was a lovely sitting area. Behind the sitting area was the door to a shop and it said KATE.

It was bright and airy, colorful and very California cool, or Mykonos cool depending on who you follow on Instagram. And there was Kate!  She had reopened. Only now she is knitting the most amazing sweaters and making caftans out of gorgeous cashmere shawls.  Her shop is like a living room and visiting it is like stopping in to see a friend.

I immediately plunked myself on her sofa and we caught up. I was so happy to have found her again.

She is also back online. Check it out. But she now calls it KATE.

I'm closing in on this lotion. She has it made for her in Mexico. It has sesame and olive oil in it, plus it smells like rose. and it's a natural sunscreen. I'm ordering a bunch.

  • I love them both too. Kate, like you, has such great taste and is so sweet. I love the new shop. If you haven’t seen it you must.
And her mom Marilyn has been so generous to me, she always writes long articles on any project I do. #gratitude
